The Times “Cycle Safe” Campaign in the UK is still going strong. In Italy, “Salvaiciclisti” is going crazy. It may have even eclipsed its sister campaign across the channel.
Tens of thousands Italians inspired by ‘Salvaiciclisti’ gathered in Rome last month demanding better conditions for cyclists. And now, the campaign has a new ally: Mario Monti, the Italian Prime Minister.
In a letter to campaigners on Monday, Monti wants to “improve the conditions of those who use the bicycle to move around in the city”.

And he’s right. Italy can do better. Some cities such Ferrara already have 27% of tripsdone by bike while other places like Rome are famous for clogged streets and dangerous roads. It’s just a matter of the right infrastructure, funding and political courage.

Today marks a decisive day in the push for 30 km/h speed limits throughout Europe. The European Parliament adopted a resolution in which it “strongly recommends the responsible authorities to introduce speed limits of 30 km/h in all residential areas and on single-lane roads in urban areas which have no separate cycle lanes.” This resolution is part of a wide range of measures to halve Europe’s 31,000 annual road fatalities by 2020.
