History of the Charter

The European Road Safety Charter was launched in 2004 for the Directorate-General for Mobility and Transport (DG MOVE - European Commission). Since then, this unique road safety awareness platform has reached every level of civil society in all 28 European Union Member States.

During the past decade, the European Road Safety Charter has been able to build a community of over 2,300 signatories who have all contributed to improving road safety standards and culture, through real commitments and concrete actions.

The ERSCharter has now entered a new phase for the period of 2013 – 2016. As well as a re-launched website and visual identity, the renewed Charter aims to capitalise on the lessons learned from the previous phases. As a result, the process of making commitments has been simplified and further autonomy has been given to members so that they can undertake and evaluate their own actions.
