Excellence in Road Safety Awards 2006: The European Commission wished to celebrate the great number of road safety actions and initiatives being undertaken within the framework of the European Road Safety Charter.

The Excellence in Road Safety Awards, held the 29th of November at the Metropole Hotel in Brussels, is both a celebration and an acknowledgement of the innovative and effective initiatives being carried out in Europe to help save lives on our roads.
The Awards were given to the best practices in the following categories:

• Large companies/multinationals: STATOIL LATVIJA (Latvia)
• Small/medium-sized companies: SERVILEASE (Spain)
• Federations: SUOMEN TAKSILIITO (Finland)
• Institutions: POLICIE ČESKÉ REPUBLIKY, SLUŽBA DOPRAVNÍ POLICIE (Czech Republic)
• NGOs and similar organisations: ÆLDRE SAGEN (Denmark)
• Regions and cities: LONDON BOROUGH OF SUTTON (United Kingdom)

To date, many different stakeholders in civil society have signed up to the European Road Safety Charter with commitments that reflect the diversity of the community.

Brussels, 30 November 2006 – Lifesaving schemes including campaigning taxi drivers in Finland, primary school education in the Czech Republic and youth motorcycle training in the UK have been honoured for their contribution to the reduction in the death toll on European roads.

At the Excellence Road Safety Awards on Wednesday 29 November, Mr. Jacques Barrot, Vice-President of the European Commission in charge of transport, has recognised a total of six organisations in Europe for their innovative and effective initiatives contributing in different ways to the European Road Safety Charter’s goal: saving 25.000 lives a year by 2010.

Furthermore, 18 European companies have also signed the Charter at the award event. The inclusion of these major companies bears witness to the impetus gained by the Charter in two years. Safety on European Roads has become an essential focal point and responsibility of many European companies.

The six innovative schemes acknowledged by the European Commission as excellent initiatives within the framework of the European Road Safety Charter were selected from 500 charter members in the following categories: large companies/multinationals, small/medium-sized companies, federations, institutions, NGOs and regions and cities.

• Grandes entreprises: Statoil (détenteur de stations-essence, Lituanie) s'est engagée à agir en faveur du port de la ceinture de sécurité (en apposant des panneaux de rappel à la sortie de ses stations services) et à sensibiliser les conducteurs sur les méfaits de l'alcool au volant à travers son réseau de stations services dans le pays. Elle lancera également une campagne "Voir. Etre vu" qui inclura la distribution de réflecteurs aux enfants et un contrôle gratuit des feux des véhicules dans les stations.
• PME: Servilease (société de location de véhicules, Espagne) s'est engagée à améliorer la qualité de son parc automobile en acquérant des véhicules mieux sécurisés (mécanismes de rappel du port de la ceinture, contrôle électronique de stabilité) et à sensibiliser sa clientèle aux différents aspects de la sécurité routière.
• Associations/Fédérations: Suomen Taksiliitto (fédération de taxis, Finlande), regroupe 90% des taxis finlandais et s'est engagée à former gratuitement ses conducteurs à une conduite plus sécurisée et à promouvoir le port de la ceinture par des rappels visuels dans ses véhicules.
   
• Institutions: Policie České Republiky (Police municipale, République tchèque) s'est engagée à donner des cours de prévention gratuits à des élèves d'écoles primaires et d'auto-écoles dans la ville de Ústí nad Labem (Bohême du nord, 118.000 habitants). Elle s'est également engagée à étudier les portions routières à haut risque: évaluation des accidents et publication des résultats.
   
• ONG: Aeldre Sagen (association de troisième âge, Danemark) s'est engagée à dispenser des cours gratuits de prévention routière aux personnes âgées, à lancer une campagne pour l'utilisation des dispositifs de sécurité (casques, ceintures de sécurité), et à rencontrer les urbanistes afin de renforcer la prise en compte des usagers vulnérables lors des projets d'infrastructure routière.
   
• Collectivités territoriales: London Borough of Sutton (Royaume-Uni) s'est engagé à former des élèves, cyclistes et jeunes conducteurs à la prévention routière, ainsi qu'à lancer une campagne spécialement destinée aux deux-roues à moteur, avec le concours de l'armée britannique.<

Mr. Jacques Barrot is delighted with the Excellence Award Winners : « Ces engagements reflètent la pluralité des organisations signataires ainsi que la diversité des engagements qui peuvent entrer dans le cadre de la Charte. The EU Energy and Transport Directorate General launched the European Road Safety Charter in 2004. The purpose of the Charter is to take concrete actions, assess results and further heighten awareness about the need to reduce road accident fatalities. The ambition is to halve the number of traffic deaths in the European Union by 2010. The European Commission invites all members of civil society (institutions, associations and companies) to sign the Charter and to commit to undertake specific, measurable road accident prevention.
