In 2016, the Automobile Club of Moldova (ACM) in partnership with the National Patrolling Inspectorate (NPI) launched a targeted ‘Sober and Safe Villages’ campaign under the FIA Road Safety Action programme to reduce drink driving in three regions (Soroca, Hincesti, Cahul) that had been identified as the most 'dangerous' in terms of violations and crashes due to driving under the influence. The ‘Sober and Safe Villages’ project is a continuation of the pilot campaign carried out in 2015 within the project TRACECA Road Safety II, ‘Don’t drink and drive’ campaign, funded by the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) and the FIA Foundation. The campaign concluded on 1st December 2016 with a regional conference attended by projects participants from the villages of Soroca, Hincesti, Cahul, and Congaz – who were chosen out of a project competition. During the 10-month campaign, over 100,000 local people directly benefitted from the project with significant decreases reported in the number of road traffic crashes and associated injuries caused by drink driving in each of the three regions compared to the same period of 2015. On average the number of road crashes related to drink driving decreased by over 40% with a 35% reduction in injuries across all three regions. During the event, Tatiana Mihailova of the ACM thanked all project partners and offered prizes to those who performed the best across various areas, including: Safest and most sober region, won by the Southern Patrol Battalion in Cahul for their significant reduction in the number of road crashes and injuries. Most active volunteer team, won by the Youth Resource Centre ‘Dacia’ in Soroca. Most active local police, won by Platoon Hincesti, Cimislia, Levova of the Brigade No. 3 of the Patrolling Battalion of the NPI of the Ministry of Interior. Best cooperation at local level, won by the Mayor’s Office of Congaz village. NPI Chief, Livii Baziuc, received a special award ‘The Loyal Partner’ on behalf of the NPI in gratitude of their cooperation and support in the realization of the Sober and Safe Villages project.
