City council with 90 members of staff. As a local authority body, it provides various services to the public. Through the municipal police force (17 operators), we have been involved for several years in the field of road safety.

Over the next three years, we will extend and reinforce the "La Strada Giusta" [the right road] project through the following:

• Road safety education interventions in schools (for 1,800 pupils from three to eighteen years of age). These will involve all of the pupils at those schools in our region, with lessons in classrooms (approximately 150 hours) and school trips together with municipal police officers to observe correct behaviour and traffic offences. There will be a variety of topics depending on the age range: pupils up to the age of eight will be taught about pedestrian rules and regulations; for pupils between the ages of eight and eleven, the focus will be on bicycles and signs. The older pupils (between the ages of eleven and fourteen) will learn the basic rules relating to mopeds, to prepare them for the moped driving test course. For the final age range (fifteen- to eighteen-year-olds), road safety issues will be dealt with, particularly those relating to the risks of speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
• An information stand will be present at public events (involving 10,000 to 15,000 members of the public). We will be present at six public events in our region. The public will be involved and informed through games linked to the Highway Code. Main topics: the risks of speeding, drinking and driving (involving the public in tests and handing out single-use blood alcohol testing devices), the use of seatbelts, the dangers of using mobile phones when driving, and useful advice for pedestrians and cyclists. Preparation of specific campaigns and distribution of information material.
• Driving licence points recovery course (100 drivers annually), thus establishing a framework to promote ongoing education actions and the rehabilitation of drivers at risk.
• Study of the causes and location of road accidents. Establishment of a road safety office by the municipal police force and the technical office, to improve our knowledge about the causes of accidents in our region, and to gain useful information in order to reduce accidents and avoid repeats.
