The department was established to promote and coordinate scientific research activities in the field of civil and environmental engineering. Furthermore, the DICA seeks to encourage and promote the incorporation of research with its high-level training activity, carried out through doctorate and post-doctorate courses, research grants, Master’s degrees, cooperation in strategic research projects and international cooperation.

Compromiso
The European Commission has recognised that roads constitute one of the three pillars on which to base its accident reduction policy.
The actions undertaken will continue to relate primarily to the dissemination of up-to-date knowledge and correct operational methodologies to assess safety levels in relation to the feasibility and correct identification of road safety improvement interventions.
- Dissemination among management bodies, public authorities and private companies, engineering professionals and students of technical know-how and skills regarding the correct planning and management of road infrastructures, with specific reference to achieving adequate safety standards, will be continued through meetings, workshops, study days and training courses (at least two per year).
- Development of research activities in the sector of road infrastructure safety, with national and international dissemination.
- Study grants will be awarded on road safety topics to young researchers (at least one grant per year).
The work team will comprise approximately ten people, including researchers, research award-winners, grant-holders, doctorate students and students.
