Kuresaare City Goverment
Kuressaare is the capital of Saaremaa. The town, has territory of about 15 sq.km and a population of about 15,092
Compromiso
One of the traffic safety challenges is a busy traffic of motor vehicles in the city centre.
Considering the size of Kuressaare, the most appropriate mean of transport is bicycle, the use of which is hindered by the insufficiency of cycle paths. Cyclists are forced to ride in the middle of car traffic, jeopardising thus the safety of themselves and others.
Insufficient street lighting and the means of traffic management of a low quality or not meeting standards have a negative impact on traffic safety in some city areas.
Commitment:
1. At least 5 more kilometers of cycle paths will be constructed in Kuressaare by 2013 whereas a special attention will be paid to safety issues.
The existing cycle paths (13 km) together with the new ones will secure safe cycling in all recreation areas of the city and direct the cyclers on EuroVelo biking route to safe cycling areas.
2. To reduce driving speed, at least 3 elevated pedestrian crossings will be constructed by 2013.
3. To increase safety, 100 traffic signs of a low quality or not meeting standards will be replaced in 3 years. Special lightning will be installed at most dangerous pedestrian crossings.
4. We will renovate at least 6 km of the worn out street lightening cables, posts and lamps by 2013.
