Cyprus: Governmental Measures in 2010 to Target Road Safety for Young People

| National Charter TourA National Charter signing event was held in Nicosia on 14 January 2010, in the presence of the President of the Republic of Cyprus and 6 governmental ministers. 21 Cypriot stakeholders signed the European Road Safety Charter, including companies, institutions and local authorities as well as the Technical Chamber of Cyprus, which renewed its commitment focusing on strengthening even more the social alliance for safety on Cyprus roads.
Speaking at the signing ceremony of the European Road Safety Charter, held at the Presidential Palace, the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Mr. Demetris Christofias, stressed that this campaign will convey a message to many young people that life is valuable for them and for the entire country: “We consider this interminable loss of life unforgivable and absolutely unreasonable.” Mr. Demetris Christofias decided to personally contribute to efforts to reduce casualties from road accidents during 2010, which is designated as “Road Safety Year Focusing on Youth”. Within this framework, an intensive program of specific actions will be developed as social alliance collaboration against road accidents together with ministries, public and social institutions and private organizations.
Speaking at the National Charter signing event, the Minister of Communications and Works, Mr. Nicos Nicolaides, assured - as President of the Road Safety Council - that in 2010 all relevant government agencies and the Cypriot society will engage in a dynamic effort to drastically reduce road accidents in young people.
The Minister of Justice and Public Order, Mr. Lucas Lucas, underlined that the effective involvement of the President of the Republic in the fight against the road traffic accidents acts as a wake-up call to the commitment and involvement of all entities, whether public, private or social, all citizens, particularly the young people themselves in the common struggle to address one of the most serious problems in the country. Everyone, he added, can help and there are already excellent examples from those who signed the ERS Charter.
The head of the European Commission Representation in Cyprus, Mrs. Androulla Kaminara, was also present at the event and congratulated those who signed the European Road Safety Charter, by saying: “The presence of the President of the Republic at today's event is very positive and shows once again, that the interest and desire to change things is at its highest level”.
