| National Charter Tour
The National Tour of the European Road Safety Charter stopped in Sofia on the 22nd of February to welcome 27 new entities joining the initiative and to encourage 13 renewing entities to continue with their road safety commitments. They all signed the Charter in the presence of Mr. Alexander Tsvetkov, Minister of Transport, Information Technologies and Communications and Mrs. Dora Krumova from the Representation of the European Commission in Bulgaria and committed to improve the safety of road traffic in the country through concrete future actions.
Mrs Krumova opened the event and welcomed more than 110 participants from different entities who attended the ceremony. She emphasised the need for common and constant actions in order to make both Bulgarian and European roads safer.
During the event Mr. Tsvetkov stated that for the last year and a half, with the joint efforts of entities involved in road safety from the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology, through NGOs and companies, the number of deaths on Bulgarian roads has decreased dramatically - from an average of about 1000 people per year to 775 last year reaching the level of the far back 1965 when the number of cars on Bulgarian roads was 6 times lower. He said that already last year some of the road safety campaigns that the ministry launched, such as checking the brake fluid, crating free telephone number for victims of accidents, encouraging tire checks, etc. were implemented with the support of local stakeholders.
By signing the Charter those 27 stakeholders committed to put efforts in different initiatives or projects tackling various road safety problems in the country and acting upon many goals – from improving infrastructure, to building culture of behaviour and raising awareness among the society. The signing ceremony gave them the opportunity to get to know each other, find partners in their projects and exchange ideas and good practices.
