Competition for Road Safety at Work in the EU
The European Transport Safety Council (ETSC)(1) has launched a competition on work related road safety. This is part of its new project launched called Preventing Road Accidents and Injuries for the Safety of Employees (PRAISE)(2). PRAISE aims to increase road safety in the work context and “praise” best practices in order to help employers secure high road safety standards for their employees. It is estimated that in Europe six out of ten work accidents resulting in death are road crashes, including both crashes while driving for work and commuting crashes(3). Using the roads is a necessary part of everyone’s daily business, increasingly for work-related purposes. However such an everyday activity should not carry such a high risk of injury and death.

The competition(4)  aims to spur on companies throughout the EU to tackle road safety at work. ETSC is searching for entrants who can show what they have achieved through their efforts to reduce road collisions at work. ETSC’s panel of judges will evaluate entrants based on a number of criteria including evidence of progress, innovation and sustainability of the work. The ‘PRAISE Award’ will be presented at the PRAISE Brunch to one employer identified for taking on the road safety challenge responsibly. The first PRAISE brunch will take place on May 6th 2010 in Brussels.

Employers awarded by PRAISE will receive a positive recognition of efforts made in road safety and press coverage. Moreover, they will have the opportunity to exchange best practise with other companies committed in road safety and creating new business opportunities. Candidates who wish to apply can find more information about criteria for entry and application forms on ETSC website, clicking on PRAISE Homepage. The deadline for entries is set by the 1st of April 2010.
