Dim is a French textile company, specialising in the production and sale of underwear and lingerie. It has 2,500 employees working on four industrial sites and two administrative ones, of whom 300 sales reps have to drive as part of their job.

• In order to make the staff of DIM aware of the importance of respect for the Highway Code, each quarter we test their knowledge of it, and the mistakes they make lead to a revision and explanation of the rules in question.

  The tests take 45 minutes and will involve 140 volunteers a year for three years.

• In order to ensure employees’ cars are kept in good condition, we ask the volunteer workers to have their vehicles checked on the company car park and we inform the owners of anything that needs improving. The inspections are carried out by students from the local mechanics’ school and deal with the state and pressure of the tyres and the state of the windscreen wipers.

  This action will be carried out in 2007 and will involve about 200 cars on a voluntary basis.

• To help drivers prevent accidents, we organise safe and responsible driving training initiatives for the employees who drive as part of their work.

  The training lasts one day and involves 60 to 70 people each year for three years: in order of priority, the sales reps, the workers who drive as part of their jobs and those who have long journeys to and from their workplace.

• In order to improve the infrastructures around the sites, we do surveys among all the employees about the road safety “black spots” along their route. We analyse the data and forward them to the road authorities (Departmental Facilities Directorate).

  This initiative will be carried out in 2006 and possibly repeated in 2007 and/or 2008.

• In order to understand their causes, we analyse the traffic accidents and incidents experienced by the employees with identical procedures to the ones applied for work accidents. The aim is to make all the staff aware of the importance of the human factor in traffic accidents. This initiative is part of the risk assessment linked to the document-unique (risk assessment formalisation system according to French regulations).

  That should involve, on a voluntary basis, about fifteen cases per year for three years.
