The Road Safety Plan for Edinburgh to 2020 is working towards Vision Zero and the provision of a modern road network where all users are safe from the risk of being killed or seriously injured.

 

The Plan acts as a focus for all road safety activity in Edinburgh through a series of 66 interventions which have been assigned to one of four Action Plan’s: i) working together ii) children, young and elderly people and cyclists and pedestrians iii) speed, impairment, driver and motorcyclists iv) tram, infrastructure and vehicles.

 

Action Plan’s involve a variety of working groups to tackle the interventions. Interventions include, for example, pre-driver events, a cycle safety working group, detailed data analysis, campaigns, audits, training and education. Interventions involve Council, Police, Fire and Health Service professionals, as well user groups and other relevant bodies, ensuring collaborative working. This partnership approach has been branded as Streets Ahead – Road Safety in Edinburgh, and has a dedicated website.

 

Promotion of the website is the main way to reach the people of Edinburgh. Working groups will establish specific approaches, likely including events, campaigns, leaflets and social marketing.

 

For accountability purposes, each Action Plan has a named Chair, and each intervention a named owner. All owners report intervention progress to their Chair, who in-turn feeds back to the Partnership Steering Group that monitors the Plan’s progress. The Steering Group is Chaired by the Head of Transport.

 

The Plan will only retain its relevance and effectiveness if it is regularly updated. On an annual basis, the previous year’s casualty figures will be analysed to identify trends and patterns. A major review of the Plan will be carried out bi-annually, to measure progress on the interventions, and ensure the Plan reflects current Government and Council policies, as well as the prevailing economic conditions.
