Road Safety in the City: How to improve vulnerable user´s safety
In this community we will focus on the new EC priority in terms of Road Safety Towards a European road safety area: policy orientations on road safety 2011-2020. One of the main objectives of EC focuses on reducing “the high number of fatalities and serious injuries faced by vulnerable road users such as riders of motorcycles, mopeds, cyclists and pedestrians and the users presenting an intrinsic "fragility" (e.g. elderly, children, the disabled), which is particularly high in urban areas.” We will discuss the partnerships that can be set up on a local level in order to guarantee vulnerable users’ safety. Members can provide tips and strategies of how to improve users’ safety in urban areas with a special focus on networking and transfer of knowledge between the different levels (European, national/regional and local). In addition, we will discuss the question, of the best ways to involve local stakeholders. Based on the CIVITAS experience, we will provide an overview on networking between cities and sustainable urban mobility and how it can influence local decision makers.
