Facts and Stats About the Charter
The Facts
On February 2011, nearly 2,100 organisations from all types had applied to become signatories of the European Road Safety Charter:
- 15% large companies and multinationals
- 23% small and medium companies
- 13% professional associations or federations
- 24% NGOs
- 16% regions and cities
- 9% institutions
They have taken commitments to improve:
- User behaviour: 61%
- Vehicle safety: 13%
- Infrastructure safety: 18%
- Professional transport: 11%
- Accidentology: 12%
It is estimated that the number of persons affected by the 2,100 signatories’ commitments is about 252,300,000, and that the number of material produced within the frame of those commitments (leaflets, posters…) is approximately 415,800,000.
From 2005, nearly 1,000 European citizens have also participated directly in the ERSCharter by sending contributions to the Summer contest or attending the Citizens’ forums.
It Will Never Happen to Me!
Over 35,500 road traffic fatalities in 2009 – this is equivalent to over 265 fatal air crashes involving medium-range aircraft. According to statistics, one out of three people will be injured in a traffic accident at some point in their lives. Up to the age of 55, traffic accidents are the most common causes of hospitalisation. In fact, the dangers of road traffic are all-pervasive and concern everyone.
