The main activity of the company Transportes Bizarro Duarte Lda is the carriage of goods by road for hire or reward, operating throughout Europe. The company has 27 heavy goods vehicles and 29 drivers, who cover 2,500,000 kilometres a year on European roads.
To provide a quality service, first and foremost it is essential to ensure that it is safe, and the key to that is the professionalism of the company’s drivers. That is why we signed the European Road Safety Charter with the following commitments: 1) Over a period of three years, we will provide all our drivers with defensive and rational driving training. Each driver will receive 20 hours of training. This training will be certified, making it a valuable compulsory training asset. 2) We will undertake awareness activities to improve driver behaviour and attitudes. The activities will take place at our facilities, through a series of workshops lasting between one and two hours. 3) We will value our drivers’ efforts through a system of awards, by assessing and selecting a “driver of the month”, for example. We will not simply assess the number of accidents. Rather, we will assess a set of factors (fuel consumption, tyre use, etc.). This means that the driver with the best assessment will have driven defensively and rationally, thereby reducing the risk of having an accident. We shall offer greater assistance and awareness support to drivers whose efforts are not as good. With these activities, we intend to offer awareness training to 40% of our drivers in 2009, 30% in 2010 and the remaining 30% in 2011. In the last three years, the company has been responsible for six accidents a year on average. It is our aim to reduce that average to three accidents a year by 2011.
